History
In 1908, the "Aristolochite Society", a local honor society, was created on the campus of the University of Michigan. This society later became known as the "Rho Chi Society", and was granted a charter by the State of Michigan on May 19,1922.
After five years of existence, Rho Chi had eight chapters, and after ten years there were eighteen active chapters. The Alpha Nu chapter, of the Rho Chi Society, was founded at the University of Tennessee in 1949. Currently, there are 90 active chapters and additional chapters are anticipated at new schools of pharmacy.
The high standards maintained for membership in Rho Chi have resulted in the widespread recognition of the Society not only by the profession of pharmacy, but also by the academic world in general. Rho Chi is accorded a place in Banta’s Greek Exchange and a sketch of the Society appears in Baird’s Manual. Since 1947 the Society has been a member of the Association of College Honor Societies.

Programs
Annual Rho Chi Used Book Sale: Each year at the beginning of the fall semester, Rho Chi sponsors and organizes a used book sale to help incoming students defer the high cost of textbooks.
Rx for Success Study Skills Workshop: Each fall before the first round of exams, Rho Chi sponsors a study skills workshop for P-1's. This is an opportunity for first-year students to receive study tips specific to each class and professor from successful upperclassmen.
Tutoring Program: Rho Chi offers a tutoring program for students experiencing academic distress. This program is conducted through the SASS (Student Academic Support Services). Students may contact the SASS (http://www.uthsc.edu/sass/) for further details.
Rho Chi Initiation Banquet: Rho Chi hosts an initiation banquet in the spring of each year to initiate new members of the Society. This banquet serves as an opportunity for fellow students, faculty, friends, and family to recognize new members for their academic success.
The programs and activities of the Alpha Nu Chapter are constantly evolving. In the past, the chapter has manned a water station at the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital 5K Race, hosted a social for current members, and sponsored Lunch and Learn programs for pharmacy students. This year, the Alpha Nu Chapter plans to create an outreach program for local high schools and universities to promote the profession of pharmacy.
